Log Cabin Building Course

April 2026 | Saskatchewan River Delta

Join us for a week-long, off-grid immersive log cabin building course in the heart of the Saskatchewan River Delta. This hands-on experience introduces the fundamentals of building a traditional log cabin, with a strong focus on the Norwegian Notch and off-grid construction techniques rooted in generations of land-based knowledge.

The course takes place entirely at our remote wilderness lodge, accessible only by boat. We’ll transport you by river along the Saskatchewan River to our home, where you’ll stay in cozy, rustic cabins and enjoy nourishing, home-cooked meals throughout the week.

Our family has spent generations living on the land, harvesting local materials, and building homes with what the bush provides. This course is our opportunity to share that knowledge — blending Indigenous land-based teachings with traditional Scandinavian log-building methods.

What You’ll Learn

Throughout the week, participants will gain both practical skills and foundational knowledge, including:

  • Safety and tool handling

  • Logging and log selection

  • Cabin planning and layout

  • Peeling and preparing logs

  • Scribing and notching

  • Off-grid living considerations

This is a hands-on course, ideal for beginners and those looking to deepen their understanding of traditional log construction.

Your Instructors

Léo Claret is a French woodsman who studied civil engineering and spent years in Norway learning traditional Norwegian log-building techniques. He brings a strong blend of technical expertise, hand-tool skills, and practical construction experience.

Solomon Carriere is Cree–Métis and brings a lifetime of experience hunting, fishing, trapping, and building cabins in the bush using minimal tools. His teachings are deeply rooted in lived experience and land-based knowledge.

About the Lodge

We are a family-run, off-grid adventure lodge located approximately 55 km from Cumberland House, SK, in the Saskatchewan River Delta. Accessible only by boat in the summer and snowmachine in the winter, our lodge offers shared cabin accommodations, wood-fired sauna, and a true digital detox experience.

We live fully off-grid:

  • Wood stoves for heat

  • Water hauled from the river

  • Outhouses

  • Food sourced through hunting, fishing, gardening, and local suppliers

This is a place to slow down, reconnect, and learn through doing.

Getting Here

Parking is located at Dale Martin’s Boat Launch, 16.5 km past EB Campbell on Highway 123. If you start seeing signs for 20 km and beyond, you’ve gone too far and missed the turn. The pin location will be sent to the participant.
